PURPOSE: A semiconductor laser device and an optical pickup device are provided to reduce a return light to the semiconductor laser device at a low cost. CONSTITUTION: The semiconductor laser device(1) has a semiconductor laser(8) and a polarizing diffraction grating(15) that is arranged ahead of the semiconductor laser(8). A light reflected from an optical recording medium(6) is diffracted by the polarizing diffraction grating(15) according to the polarization direction of the reflected light. The reflected light is thereby deviated from a direction toward the semiconductor laser(8) to prevent that the reflected light returns to the semiconductor laser(8).
