Disclosed is an elevator apparatus having a car on which is mounted a vibration reducing device adapted to be engaged with a stationary portion in the hoistway when the car is at rest to attenuate vibration of the car. The vibration reducing device has a friction shoe to be pressed against a guide rail serving as the stationary portion and an electromagnetic actuator for bringing the friction shoe into and out of contact with the guide rail. <IMAGE>
