The present invention provides a recombinant HSV incorporating an adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene comprising a promoter and a polynucleotide sequence encoding a rep polypeptide. Preferably, the rep polypeptide or the promoter is conditionally active. The HSV can also include an AAV-derived ITR cassette and/or an AAV gene encoding a cap protein. The HSV can be used to direct site-specific integration of ITR cassettes within host cells and to facilitate packaging of such cassettes into AAV capsids.
