Aqueous formaldehyde solution (I) contains formaldehyde in the form of monomeric formaldehyde, methylene glycol and polyoxymethylene glycols in a total concentration of at least 65 wt.%. The average mol. wt. of the polyoxymethylene glycols with respect to the formaldehyde concentration is defined by a specific mathematical formula in the specification. Independent claims are also included for: (1) production of (I) which comprises separating an aqueous formaldehyde solution containing 5-65 wt.% of a starting mixture of formaldehyde in the form of monomeric formaldehyde, methylene glycol and polyoxymethylene glycols and optionally other components as stabilizers into at least two fractions in which different compounds of the mixture are enriched in comparison to the starting mixture, where in at least one of the fractions water is removed so that the total concentration of formaldehyde is at least 65 wt.%, and (2) production of monomeric, oligomeric or polymeric reaction products (II) by addition of (I) to monomeric formaldehyde, methylene glycol and/or polyoxymethylene glycols.
