<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high purity tetraphenylphosphonium phenolate which is liquid at a room temperature, suitable for a solvent-less production of a thermoplastic polycarbonate as an ester interchange catalyst. <P>SOLUTION: This a high purity tetraphenylphosphonium phenolate which is liquid at a room temperature is produced by (i) performing the reaction of a tetraphenylphosphonium halide with phenol in an aqueous alkaline solution at 0-55°C temperature by ≥10 molar ratio of the phenol to the tetraphenylphosphonium halide and at pH value of 9.5-11, and (ii) on the completion of the reaction (i), adding an alcohol to the reaction solution by an amount sufficiently separating a water phase from an organic phase. In this method, the weight ratio of the reaction solution to the alcohol is (2:1)-(1:2), and the solubility of the alcohol to pure water is <20 wt. %. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
