PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a coating such as a luminescent layer having uniform thickness in each section by eliminating thickness irregularity of the coating conventionally generated when the luminescent layer or the like of an EL element is formed of a coating liquid for every section surrounded by barrier ribs on a substrate. SOLUTION: The problem can be solved by forming water-nonrepellent barrier ribs 4 with both surfaces tilted on a substrate 2, and by forming, between the barrier ribs 4, coatings wherein the maximum value and the minimum value of the coating thicknesses T thereof satisfy Tmax/Tmin<130%. When the EL element is formed, it is preferable that a part of each first electrode 3 is covered with the barrier rib, and the barrier rib 4 may be a two-layer structure composed of a lower part 4a and an upper part 4b.
