PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original illuminator which enables illumination without causing a shade of the original even when there is ruggedness on the original surface, in an illumination system using a tubular light source with an aperture performing planar light emission and a reflective plate illuminating the original by reflecting one part of the light from the tubular light source. SOLUTION: The center pointing directionαof the aperture 17 of a xenon lamp 4 illuminating the original D on a reading position P by the planar light emission is set to be a position nearer to the reflective plate 19 than the middle position M between the reading position P and the reflective plate 19. Thereby, the light quantity of a light which directly illuminates the reading position P with the xenon lamp 4 can be relatively reduced and light quantity of a light made incident on the reflective plate 19 from the xenon lamp 4 and reflected therefrom can be relatively increased. From the viewpoint of the illuminance on the reading position P, the balance between the illuminance level La of the direct illumination light due to the xenon lamp 4 and the illuminance level Lb of the reflective illumination light due to the reflective plate 19 can be maintained and the shade of the original is prevented from occurring even when the part having the ruggedness on the surface of the original on the reading position P is illuminated.
