PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus by which the occurrence of a defective image in transfer is prevented by giving the optimum transfer condition matched with the state of a transfer material by detecting the electrified state of the transfer material thereby always maintaining excellent transfer efficiency. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus of an electrophotographic system provided with a transfer means 2 to transfer a toner image formed on an image carrier 1 to the transfer material 4 is provided with a surface potential measuring means 5 to measure the surface potential of the image transfer surface of the transfer material 4 before entering a transfer part where the image carrier 1 and the transfer means 2 are opposed and a controlling means 6 to vary the transfer current or the transfer bias of the transfer means 2 based on the measured result of the surface potential of the surface potential measuring means 5.
