A COMMUNICATION UNIT AND A METHOD OF GENERATING A CONTROL SIGNAL THEREFOR

The system in the base station allows power control values generated by the first subsystem based on the DPCCH (3GPP 25.214 Rel. 99-UMSTS technical specifications) to be replaced by power control values based on the HS-DPCCH (3GPP 25.214 Rel.5-UMTS technical specifications) by adding a new subsystem. The subsystem would be used in case the base station is the serving base station of a user equipment in soft handover. The Release 99 power control command generation procedure is duplicated by the Release 5 processing entity. The duplicated Release 99 power control command is then negated and added to the Release 5 power control command (which is based on HS-DPCCH for HS-DSCH serving base station). After summing of the outputs of the Release 99 and Release 5 processing entities, this has the effect of cancelling the power control command based on HS-DPCCH. This allows the implementation of the new Release 5 features without changing Release 99 functionality.
