The sump from which water is drawn off to the suction pump is made of concrete with vertical cylindrical walls (2) and a flat floor (3). A housing (13) on the side of the shaft has a horizontal pipe entering (1) at the top. Water pours into a central chamber (14) where light solid material (21) can float to the surface and heavy solid material (20) can sink to the bottom. Partitions separate the central chamber from two side chambers (15,16) and water may flow through apertures (22,18) into these chambers. The outlet for the suction pump (24) is in the floor of one of these chambers.
