[Also in Division H5] A continuously operating cryostat comprises a double-walled evacuated housing 44 containing a heat shield 42, a pipe 52 for supplying liquefied gas-vapour mixture to a separator 49, from which the vapour passes to a coil 53 in contact with the inner wall of the housing and the liquid passes to an expansion valve 56, and a chamber 32 which receives the expanded refrigerant and contains an object 30 to be cooled. Liquid passing to the valve and vapour from chamber 32 are in heat exchange at 54 and the vapour is withdrawn by a pump through line 48. The valve setting may be adjusted by a hand wheel 57. Perforated radiation shields 58 are provided. The object 30 may comprise a polarized proton target in which case chamber 32 comprises a resonant cavity which is supplied with microwave energy via guide 12, windows being provided in the housing 44, shield 42, and chamber 32 for the proton beam. The cavity also contains windings for measuring nuclear polarization (Fig. 1, not shown). The liquefied gas may be helium.</p> |
