PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that large recording capacity is occasionally required for recording thumbnail images together when recording moving images. SOLUTION: An MPEG encoder 36 performs compression to thumbnail images which are selected in an image selection part 38 and whose data amount is reduced in a data amount reduction part 40 by intra-image encoding based on the MPEG2 standard. The compressed thumbnail images are recorded in a thumbnail image data region 46 together with a recording address which is recorded in an encoded image data region 44 as encoded data before decoding the source image thereof.
