PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable nitrogen monoxide generating device for medical use that can supply high-purity nitrogen monoxide by a required amount by instantaneously generating the monoxide when the monoxide is required and has durability. SOLUTION: In this portable nitrogen monoxide generating device for medical use, a discharge space 24 is provided between an inlet catalyst space 22 and an outlet catalyst space 26, both of which are filled up with a photocatalyst, and electrodes 18 and 20 arranged to face each other in the discharge space 24 to cause arc discharge. In addition, the air supplied to the inlet catalyst space 22 is made to flow to the discharge space 24. In the discharge space 24, a mixed gas of nitrogen monoxide and nitrogen dioxide is generated from the air by causing arc discharge between the electrodes 18 and 20 and made to flow to the outlet catalyst space 26. Then the nitrogen dioxide is removed from the mixed gas by exciting the photocatalyst T with the radiant light of the arc discharge. Therefore, a durable and safe nitrogen monoxide generating device which can reduce the nitrogen dioxide to an extremely small amount can be provided, because the photocatalyst is not damaged by electric impacts.
