A chemical reactor (1) has an outer case and a charge of bulk solid catalytic grains under a layer of packing material (4). The layer of packing material is assembled from two or more layers of flat material with a zigzag cross-sectional profile, placed back to back and together forming a series of straight or curved channels. The packing layer occupies the entire cross sectional area above the catalytic material. The panels (4) are sheets of pressed sheet metal of thickness 0.1-10 mm. The channels created by the juxtaposition of two adjacent layers of sheet metal have sidewalls at 30 to 45 to the vertical. Adjacent panels are joined to each other. The specific surface area of the profiled sheet metal is in the range 20-500 m/m.
