PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for an on-vehicle automatic transmission capable of more easily and accurately restraining temperature increase of oil (ATF) circulating in a torque converter. SOLUTION: This controller for the on-vehicle automatic transmission is provided with a lockup clutch mechanism (a lockup clutch 26), the torque converter 20, and especially with a traveling state judgment means (an electronic controller 50, an engine rotational speed sensor 62, and a throttle valve opening sensor 65). When the traveling state judgment means judges that a vehicle is in a uphill travel state and a tractive travel state, a lockup operation area, which is the operation area for the lockup clutch mechanism operated in an on state, is extended.
