PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for controlling a CVVT for an automobile engine to control the CVVT in accordance with a predicted value by predicting oil temperature from a starting state of the engine so that the CVVT smoothly works even in cold starting of the engine or restarting after a long time stop. SOLUTION: This control method includes a stage of computing the oil temperature predicted value of oil for CVVT control in accordance with cooling water temperature at the initial stage of starting the engine and elapsed time after starting, a stage to store the computed oil temperature predicted value in a memory, favorably a stage to correct the stored oil temperature predicted value in reference to a condition concerning a vehicle state including car speed and a stage to drive the CVVT in accordance with it, and the control device includes a series of orders to perform these stages.
