PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mud wall substrate which is obtained without relying on the manual work of a skilled craftsman, dispenses with much labor and a time for assembling, excellent as compared with a bamboo lath in terms of performance such as durability and the function of a resultant mud wall, and reduces a manufacturing cost, and to provide a mud wall forming method. SOLUTION: The mud wall substrate formed of a porous woody thin plate, and the mud wall forming method as an essential means, are provided. The woody thin plate is formed of plywood 12 having a number of circular pores 13 formed therein. The circular pores 13 are formed in the plywood 12 in a zigzag pattern. Each circular pore 13 has a diameter of 25 to 30 mm, and has almost triangular notches 14 formed therein in a manner extending outward from the edge of the circular pore 13. In place of the circular pores 13, polygonal pores such as triangular pores or octagonal pores may be formed in the substrate. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
