PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure a flying velocity of ink drops at a high speed by detecting a velocity of ink drops jetted from nozzles in a movement process without stopping a recording head at a detection point one by one, and to compensate an environmental variation or a variation in the velocity of ink drops due to a temperature rise of the recording head because of printing with the measured result. SOLUTION: The ink jet recorder is equipped with a velocity detecting means 2 for detecting the velocity of the ink drop (a) from a detection time of the ink drop (a) jetted from the nozzle 1b of the recording head 1, and a driving control means which controls to jet the ink drop (a) by the same timing from a plurality of nozzles in a relative movement process of the recording head 1 and the velocity detecting means 2, compares a detected value detected by the velocity detecting means 2 with a preliminarily determined target value, and changes a driving condition of the recording head 1 to make the detected value agree with the target value.
