Production of hydrogen-rich synthesis gas using hydrocarbons comprises stripping nitrogen amount of air produced by the process in a nitrogen stripping unit (2), converting stripped air and hydrocarbons in an autothermal reactor (1) with catalyst (11) and producing heat required for conversion by exothermic reaction of portion of hydrocarbons with oxygen. Converting hydrocarbons into hydrogen-rich synthesis gas comprises stripping the nitrogen amount of air produced by the process in a nitrogen stripping unit (2), converting the stripped air and the hydrocarbons in an autothermal reactor (1) which contains a catalyst (11) and which produces the heat required for the conversion by the exothermic reaction of part of the hydrocarbons with the oxygen contained in the stripped air, and pre-heating a feed material by heat exchange with the synthesis gas. An Independent claim is also included for a hydrogen generator for converting hydrocarbons into hydrogen-rich synthesis gas.
