PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader 1 which includes a CCD read unit 11 for reading a color image from the rear side of an original placed on an original platen 12 in a stationary state, and a CIS read unit 41 for reading a monochromatic image from the front side of the original while being carried on the original platen 12 that realizes stable reading without causing confusion to a user. SOLUTION: The original is carried into the CCD read unit 11 through a carrying path 22 formed in a loop wherein the image on the original is upside down and the original is carried into the CIS read unit 41 through a carrying path 24 formed almost in a straight line wherein the image on the original is not turned over. Thus, the user has only to place the original whose image is kept upside on two original trays 21, 24 so as to be free from confusion even when the image reader employs the two original trays 21, 44. Further, even when the CIS read unit 41 employs the carrying path 42 easily causing fluctuations in its carrying torque, since the original is read after it comes to a standstill, stable reading can be attained.
