PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-pressure mercury lamp, by which pressure resistance can be improved, improvements of an illuminance maintenance rate and color rendering property and miniaturization can be achieved, by preventing occurrence and promotion of a foil lifting phenomenon at a bypass part. SOLUTION: In the high-pressure mercury lamp, in which micro space surrounded by a quartz glass layer making up the bypass part, an electrode core and a metal foil and linked with an internal space of a luminous tube are formed within the bypass part, a relationship of a/A falls within a range of 0.05-0.18, wherein A is an overall length (mm) of a periphery of the electrode core in a section at a position separated by 0.5 mm from an inner end of the metal foil of the bypass part, and a is the total length (a<SB>1</SB>+a<SB>2</SB>) (mm) of outer peripheral parts of the electrode core exposed to the micro space. In the mercury lamp, a relationship of b/B may preferably fall within a range of 0.05-0.39, wherein B is the overall length (mm) in the longitudinal direction of the section of the metal foil at the section of the bypass part, and b is the total length (b<SB>1</SB>+b<SB>2</SB>) of outer peripheral parts of the metal foil exposed to the micro space.
