PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To continue operation of a cylinder in which a failure occurs even when opening/closing failure occurs in an electromagnetic drive valve device. SOLUTION: An electromagnetic drive valve device 10 for opening/closing an intake valve and an exhaust valve of an internal combustion engine by electromagnetic actuators 51, 52 is provided. An electronic control unit (ECU) 30 monitors opening/closing operation of a valve element 54 of each valve with a lift sensor 61, and carries out recovery operation to attract the valve to a valve close position once and makes combustion in a cylinder in which an irregularity occurs continue when a valve opening failure or valve closing failure occurs, and controls output torque of the cylinder in which the abnormality occurs according to determination of whether the intake valve or the exhaust valve has abnormality and whether abnormality depends on, valve opening failure or valve closing failure. Consequently, fluctuation of engine output is prevented and combustion in the cylinder in which valve opening/closing failure occurs can be continued. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
