PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tufting machine which can prevent the formation of a step (hereinafter referred to as "stop mark") wherein the lengths of piles are smaller than those of the surrounding piles, in the direction of the row of needles, when the tufting machine is stopped, and to provide a tufting method. SOLUTION: In this tufting machine, the transfers of pile yarns and/or a base fabric are adjusted so as to add or reduce a prescribed distance, when a tufting machine is stopped and/or before or after the tufting machine is stopped, thus stopping the needles at prescribed positions and preventing the formation of the stop mark, when the tufting machine is stopped. A pile-transferring distance is adjusted also in response to a stopping time, and the method for preventing the stop mark responds to the stopping time. Thereby, the method has an effect for moderating the stop mark, but it is difficult to adjust the moderation quantity. A long time is needed to obtain the optimal conditions, when the properties of the pile yarns or the pile length of a carpet are changed. Conventional techniques can practically not be used. It has been known that the appearances of stop marks are different in response to the stop times of the tufting machine, and the adjustment of the pullback distances of the pile yarns in response to the stop times could not have been responded by the conventional techniques.
