A compact damping system for each end of a hydraulic cylinder has a damping sleeve (2) fitted to the piston rod (11) and compressing a trapped volume (3) between the sleeve and the piston rod near the end travel of the piston. The trapped volume is vented into the hydraulic supply line (8)via a pressure relief valve (16). The other end of the cylinder has the damping sleeve axially attached to the end plate and has the trapped volume inside the piston rod.
