An X ray emission is directed onto an absorption filter disc (1) of metal and the transmission is greater than a minimum frequency dependent on thickness. The disc has sectors of different thicknesses. Transmissions below a maximum frequency are directed through a collimator (2) and into a curved glass fibre (3) and onto an aperture plate (4).
