The machine-readable pattern is supplied with a temporally variable signal and scanned via a number of test probes (5) for read-out and decoding of the signal at each point of the pattern. The latter can have a number of parallel code strips (10) and an auxiliary electrode (12) separating adjacent code strips along a line segment (11) along which a test probe is scanned.
