PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sizing agent for papermaking, dispersed well with a substituted succinic acid anhydride stably by not using a bad smelling substance, an oil in water type surfactant, etc. SOLUTION: This sizing agent for papermaking contains (A) a substituted succinic acid anhydride and (B-1) a (meth)acrylamide copolymer obtained by polymerizing (1) a hydrophobic (meth)acrylic acid alkyl ester monomer, (2) (meth)acrylamide, (3) an anionic monomer and (4) a cationic monomer, or (B-2) a (meth)acrylamide copolymer obtained by polymerizing (1) a hydrophobic (meth)acrylic acid alkyl ester monomer, (2) (meth)acrylamide, (3) an anionic monomer.
