The electric motor (1) and reduction gears (2) may be mounted on a bogie or in the bodywork to form part of the sprung mass of the vehicle. The final gear of the reduction gear train has the first end of a quill shaft (3) splined (4) to its central aperture. The second end of the quill shaft is splined to the interior of the hollow shaft (5) carrying the wheels (6), at the end remote from the reduction gears. The bore of the hollow shaft is gently tapered, with its widest end near the reduction gears.
