PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a decoding apparatus for a multi-standard television receiver in which an undesired switching artifact is avoided. SOLUTION: In one embodiment, a delayed composite signal delayed by a delay element in the receiver is applied to a luminance and chrominance inputs 40 and 50 of an image processor 10 for a received signal of an NTSC format. For a received signal of a PAL format, the delayed composite signal is applied only to the luminance input of the image processor, and a chrominance component of the received signal is transcoded to the NTSC format (80) and applied to the chrominance input of the image processor without passing through the composite signal delay element. The delay of the composite signal delay element is selected to be equal to the transcoding delay whereby the luminance and chrominance components in the received signal of the NTSC or PAL format are delay compensated. The delay applied to the luminance component is of the same value for signals of either format and when changing the format, it is not necessary to switch the delay element in a luminance path.
