PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic cylinder using fluid pressure and embodied in a small size by compacting the structure to sense the advancing and retreating limit positions of a piston member. SOLUTION: The hydraulic cylinder 1 is equipped with an inserting hole 30 formed in the piston member 3, a holding hole 14 formed in the head side wall 11, a shaft member 31 held by the holding hole 14 in such a way as movable for a specified distance, an engagement passive part 31c formed in the shaft member 31, an engagement active member 32 to be engaged with the passive member 31c in a position near the advancing limit position of the piston member 3 when it moves to the advancing limit position and moving the shaft member 31 toward a rod part 3b, and a limit switch 33 to work in cooperation with the shaft member 31 and capable of sensing the advancing limit position of the piston member 3. Accordingly the shaft member 31 makes movement while the piston member 3 is moving from a position near its advancing limit position to the advancing limit position, and it is possible to decrease the length in the stroke direction of the hydraulic cylinder 1.
