PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize control capable of converging output to a target value even in the case when the objective output stagnates. SOLUTION: This air-fuel ratio control system of an internal combustion engine controls an air-fuel ratio by converging the output of an exhaust gas sensor arranged in an exhaust gas system to the specified target value.This control is to feed back a value of a function to designate a converging behavior to the target value of the exhaust gas sensor. The control system evaluates deviation against the target value of the output of the exhaust gas sensor and changes the value of the function when it is judged that the deviation is at a specified stagnating state. It is possible to converge the stagnating sensor output to the target value as the value of the function is changed in accordance with the deviation against the target value of the output of the exhaust gas sensor.
