PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a diphenylacetic acid ester having excellent bleaching effects and an external preparation for skin comprising the same for prophylaxis and treatment of dermal stains and ephelides. SOLUTION: The external preparation for the skin comprises the diphenylacetic acid ester represented by general formula (1) (wherein, the substituent X is selected from an alkyl, an aralkyl, an alkenyl, an alkynyl, an aryl and a heterocyclic group). The specific diphenylacetic acid ester exhibits excellent inhibitory actions on formation of melanin and the external preparation for the skin comprising the diphenylacetic acid ester exhibits the excellent bleaching effects.
