PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the constitution for AF processing by using the result of DCT processing in small block units (8×8) for AF processing and to improve AF accuracy by appropriately evaluating a high frequency component in accordance with the frequency thereof. SOLUTION: Image data are DCT-processed in a two-dimensional DCT part for every specified block, quantized according to a quantization modulus and outputted as compressed image data. In an image pickup device having such a data compressing part, evaluation processing decided corresponding to the frequency component of the data is performed to the converted image data obtained by the two-dimensional DCT part, the converted image data processed to be evaluated are integrated, and an AF control signal is formed on the basis of an integrated value.
