PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reader which has an identifying function of an original including a black and white original and a color image and reads the entire original at a high speed in reading an original with mixed originals including an black and white original and a color image. SOLUTION: This image reader is provided with a transportation path for guiding an original fed from an original tray to a reading position, a transporting means for transporting forward the original transported to the reading position or transporting backward the original upstream, a reading means for reading the original transported by the transporting means at the reading position, an identifying means for identifying whether the original read by the reading means is an original including a black and white original or a color image, and a retraction path provided at an upstream side of the reading position and for retracting at least a portion of the original from the transportation path. The original identified by the identifying means is transported backward, once retracted to the retraction path and then transported to the reading position again and read in reading mode that corresponds to the results obtained by identifying the original.
