PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recognize the bus width supportable by each board when setting a bus width in a system having boards differed in supportable bus width connected to an external bus. SOLUTION: In this bus width setting method for a system capable of extending functions by connecting attachable and detachable boards 20A, 20B and 20C to the external bus 30, when the supportable bus widths of the boards to be connected are differed, an initiator 10 issues a special bus width request command with a bus width commonly supportable by all boards which is preliminarily determined, collects the supportable bus width from each board, recognizes the bus width supportable commonly by each board, and issues a special bus width set command with this bus width to set it to each board.
