PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the influence of aging effects and avoid the worsening of fuel economy and a great change in air-fuel ratio by controlling control parameters so that the ratio of engine output torque to fuel supply amount is the maximum. SOLUTION: An intake valve timing VVT is calculated from a standard control value f1(KL, NE), a corrected control value VVTadj and an adaptable operation execution value VVTadd. During normal operation, a preset value is set as the adaptable operation execution value Vadd for adaptable operation. The corrected control value VVTadj is set to be a value such that the ratio of engine output torque to fuel injection amount is the maximum during the adaptable operation. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
