PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a spacer with a cross-sectional shape in which dimensions in length and width are different, e.g. arranged between a pair of front and rear substrates in a panel-shaped display, as for a method for producing a spacer interposed between a pair of substrates in electronic/electric equipment and supporting the space between the substrates, and to provide the spacer. SOLUTION: In the method for producing the spacer, a glass base material with a cross-sectional shape in which dimensions in length and width are different is heated to a drawing temperature and drawn, and is cut so as to be a required length. In this case, at least both the end parts of a low viscosity glass material in the cross-sectional longitudinal direction of the glass base material are combined with a high viscosity glass material so as to be a cross-sectional shape in which dimensions in length and width are different as a whole. The glass base material is heated to a drawing temperature in which viscosity of both the low viscosity glass material and the high viscosity glass material lies within the range of 105 to 1,010 dPa×s, and viscosity of the high viscosity glass material is made higher than that of the low viscosity glass material, and is drawn.
