The method involves using a wetting roller to apply a wetting agent to the printing forme. The wetting agent is applied to a receiving roller so that there is excess wetting agent, which is collected and fed to a central reservoir. The salt content in the reservoir is measured at predetermined time intervals, and fresh water is supplied if a threshold is exceeded. Desalinated and then salinated fresh water (20) is supplied if the threshold is not reached by addition of fresh water. A central controller (7) is connected to valves (14,17). An Independent claim is included for an apparatus for wetting a printing forme.
