PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid epoxy resin giving a cured article excellent in resistance to heat and water and an epoxy resin composition containing the same. SOLUTION: The epoxy resin is prepared by reacting a compound having a structure comprising two m-cresol molecules bonded to each other through a methylene group with an epihalohydrin in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide.
