The system identifies a tyre (12) on a motor vehicle which is fitted with a magnetised material at least in part, with at least one vehicle-mounted reader (16) for scanning the magnetised material and a control unit connected to the reader (16). The magnetised material constitutes a magnetic coding (17) which is designed specific to the tyre type, e.g dimension, rubber mixture, profile, required tyre pressure, and can be incorporated into the side walls, especially facing the vehicle. The material (17) can comprise circumferentially spaced code segments, or radially-spaced strips, one of which can be a timing strip. The reader (16) is one or more active magnetic field sensor(s).
