A method of transmitting data streams between a sending host and a receiving host using a transport protocol comprising the steps of making available data streams at the sending host in the form of mono-rate or multi-rate content streams having the same content but different encoding rates, establishing a connection between the sending host and the receiving host, transmitting data streams with a selected encoded rate to the receiving host, and separating the data streams into data segments of variable length at the sending host as required during transmission.
