A process for producing pellets of solid substances, e.g. fertilizers comprises a rotatable drum 2 which at one end receives (a) particulate material via a hopper 8, (b) hot gas from a heater 6, 7 via a conduit 5 and a manifold 3 and (c) a slurry via a spray 27 supplied with gas under pressure. The drum has at its entry end a set of vanes 10 which feed the particulate material to lifting and showering vanes 11 having, intermediate their lengths, dams 12. The volume and temperature of the hot gas and the volume and temperature of the spray are regulated so that the particulate material is first dried in the section of the drum containing the vanes 10, and the droplets of slurry which encase the showering particulate material in the next section of the drum are dried below the agglomeration point. The regulation also ensures that the spray does not penetrate to the end of the drum so that there is a third end section of the drum wherein the formed pellets are dried. The pellets spill over the exit dam 13 and pass from the manifold 14 to the receiving means 15 and then pass on to screening and separating means. |
