[Also in Divisions B4; B5 and B6] In apparatus for uniting two or more webs, e.g. for applying a paper liner to one or both sides of a corrugated paper board, edge-aligning means are provided having air-pressure operated sensing and control elements and hydraulic actuating elements, and provision is made for initially adjusting the sensing elements, by electric or hydraulic means or optionally by hand. As shown, a web 10, Fig. 1, is drawn from a roll 14 mounted to be adjusted axially within limits set by limit switches which actuate a reversible electric motor 12. The web is forwarded around rollers 15A, 15B, over a roller SR axially adjustable by the edgealigning means (see below), and around rollers 15C, 16 to corrugating rollers 17A, 17B and an adhesiveapplying roller 18. A liner web 20 is similarly forwarded and is combined with web 10 between the rollers 17B and 49. The combined web 35 passes around rollers on a bridge element 40, Fig. 2, laterally adjustable by the edge aligning means, and is coated with adhesive by rollers 56, 54 and combined with a second liner web 60 by a roller 64C. The completed laminate 55 is hot-pressed between rollers 66, Fig. 3, and flats 65, and is slit to size by a slitter 70 also laterally adjustable by the edge-aligning means. Edge-aligning apparatus. This is the same in principle at all points where installed. As shown in Fig. 3 it comprises an edge-sensing plate 111 suspended on a spindle in a block 110 to which compressed air is supplied through a telescopic tube 113,114, the arrangement being such that movement of the plate 111 resulting from shrinkage or displacement of the web 55 alters the aperture of a leak valve in the block 110 and in consequence the pressure in the tube 113. Air is supplied by a compressor 118 through a valve 121 combined with a hydraulic valve, the air pressure change thus producing a corresponding change in a hydraulic circuit comprising a pressure reservoir 119 and lines 116 leading to hydraulic piston-cylinder actuating units 80, 105. The unit 105 is mounted on a bridge piece 54 which includes the air supply tube 113 and a threaded shaft 109; the shaft supports the block 110 and is rotatable to adjust the position of the sensing plate 111 initially in relation to the web. The unit 80 is connected to the slitter 70 and the remote sides of the units 80,105 are interconnected. Thus any displacement of the edge of the web results in a corresponding lateral displacement of the slitter and a movement of the bridge piece S4 to bring the sensing plate back to neutral position. The slitter comprises triangular end plates 71 connected at their corners by shafts 72 carrying adjustable slitter discs 75, the plates 71 being rotatably mounted on central bearings enabling any set of discs 75, preadjusted to a desired spacing, to be brought into use. The slitter unit is laterally displaceable on rails (not shown), and the actuator unit 80 may be connected to the centre of one plate 71, as shown, or to the base 82 of the unit. Similar edge aligning means is shown in Fig. 2, the edge-sensing plate 111 being applied to the web 60 such that any misalignment of the web produces a corresponding movement of the bridge 40, with the web 35, and simultaneous readjustment of the plate 111 to neutral position. The bridge 40 carries an alternative set of rollers 46B. In Fig. 1 edge-sensing means is provided for each of the webs 10, 20, such that any edge-displacement of either produces an adjustment of the web 10 and readjustment of both edge-sensing means to neutral position. The means for adjusting the web 10 comprises a roller SR carried by linkwork enabling the hydraulic actuator unit 30 to move it laterally. The sensing plates 111 may be initially adjusted to contact the webs in neutral position by rotating the threaded shafts 109 (see especially Fig. 3) by hand wheels 112, or may be adjusted simultaneously by electric motors 101 which operate through electric clutches 103 energized with the motors, and through telescopic couplings 104. During such initial adjustment the hydraulic circuits are rendered inoperative by closing valves 120, and these may be solenoid operated and the whole initial adjustment and subsequent operation of the apparatus controlled from a central switchboard. To secure the cutting out of the motors when the sensing plates 111 are in neutral position the spindle 141, Fig. 5, in which the rod 132 carrying the plate 111 is adjustably clamped, and which is rotatably mounted in the block 110, is formed with a flat 133B and has closely adjacent to it a blade 145 carried by an electric plug 135, the arrangement being such that contact between the blade and the flat, on slight rotation of the spindle 141, deenergizes the electric motor. The control of the compressed air leak to atmosphere is effected by reduction gearing 134,137 on the spindle 141 and a plug attached to the gear 137 respectively, the plug having a diametral slot which registers in neutral position with a bore 144 in the block 110 supplied with compressed air through the tube 113. Hydraulic motors may be used instead of hydraulic piston-cylinder units such as 30, 80 and 105, and in this case these units may be used, by blocking off the control mechanism, to effect initial adjustment of the sensing units, electric motors being dispensed with.</p>
