Glucamine salts of the general formula wherein X1 and X2 are the same or different and each represents a bromine or iodine atom, and R1 and R2 are the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl, ethyl, 2-hydroxyethyl or 2-hydroxypropyl group are prepared (a) by reacting a benzonitrile derivative of formula with a glucamine of formula R1R2N-(CHOH)4-CH2OH wherein R1 and R2 are as above, (b) by a double decomposition reaction of a soluble salt of a hydroxybenzonitrile of Formula I, such as the sodium salt, with a suitable salt of a glucamine of Formula II, such as a hydrochloride, hydrobromide or sulphate and the glucamine salt obtained by filtering and evaporation, or (c) where one or both R1 and R2 represent a 2-hydroxyethyl or 2-hydroxypropyl group, by reaction of a hydroxybenzonitrile glucamine salt of the Formula I, in which R1 represents a hydrogen atom and R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl, ethyl, 2-hydroxyethyl or 2-hydroxypropyl group, with either ethylene oxide or propylene oxide.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise as active ingredients at least one hydroxybenzonitrile glucamine salt of the general formula (wherein X1 and X2 are the same or different and each represents a bromine or iodine atom, and R1, R2 are the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl, ethyl, 2-hydroxyethyl or 2-hydroxypropyl group). There may also be included a salt of a known phenoxyalkanoic acid herbicide, e.g. 2,4-di or 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy acetic acid or a -(2,4, 5-trichlorophenoxy) propionic acid, with a glucamine or the formula R1R2N-(CHOH)4-CH2OH in which R1 and R2 are as above. Other herbicidal compounds may also be included. Specific examples of compositions shew the N-methyl glucamine salts of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic and 3,5-diiodo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile; and of 2,4-D and 3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile.
