Apparatus for the continuous production of slab-like members of plastic material, e.g. thermoplastic foam, comprises a frame 1, 2, 3, two endless band means 5 defining a narrow vertical mould cavity, having for example a width of one decimeter, means for synchronously driving said band means and means for feeding mouldable composition into the inlet end of said cavity. The bands 5 may consist of an endless series of strip-like elements as shown or sheets of flexible material, gaps being provided between the interpivoted strip-like members and perforations in the flexible sheets, to allow the escape of excess pressure or material during moulding. The width of the mould may be varied by displacing one of the endless bands 5 relative to the other on the frame by manually operated screw mechanisms. Temperature control means may be provided by electric heating elements or by a fluid heating or cooling medium in the band elements or adjacent thereto. Removable separator wall elements may be inserted at desired intervals between the bands 5 to form slabs of a desired length. Concurrently with the introduction of the plastic material into the mould continuous sheets of a flexible material may be fed into the mould, adjacent to the bands 5, to supplement the action of a mould-stripping agent applied to the active surfaces of the bands. A horizontal bottom wall may be provided for the mould cavity by an endless belt or a strip of expendable material driven in synchronism with the vertical bands. The active surfaces of the mould may be cleaned during their return movement and the bands may have patterns or relief on their active surfaces to imprint patterns or corrugations on the moulded slabs. A cover having an exhaust conduit 11 is provided in order that gas and vapour generated during moulding may be drawn off. The invention may be applied to the continuous moulding of non-cellular plastic slabs or sheets, e.g. polyvinyl sheet, compressed wood-dust, plaster and concrete slabs and cake, biscuits and the like.
