There is provided a solenoid for electromagnetic valve, which has a small size and large attraction force, and is excellent in economization. In the solenoid for electromagnetic valve, a stationary iron core 5, a movable iron core 6 and the center hole 4a of a bobbin 4 individually have an elliptic or substantially rectangular cross section. Further, a relation of d=(0.4 to 0.8) W is formed between a winding outer diameter W on a shorter axis or side of a coil 7 wound around the bobbin 4 and having an elliptic or rectangular cross section and a diameter "d" of virtual cylindrical iron core having the same cross sectional area as a coil inside cross sectional area S. Further, a ratio of a length "a" of a longer axis or side to a length "b" of the shorter axis or side is set to a range of 1.3<=a/b<=3.0 in the cross section of the stationary iron core 5 and the moving iron core 6.
