The invention relates to the treatment of compounds having the structure <FORM:1028156/C2/1> in which R is a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic or aromatic residue or, with the carbon atom, forms a cycloaliphatic ring, by reaction with aromatic amines of the benzene series, whereby one or both of the hydroxy groups is replaced by an amino group. The reaction may be effected at 120-240 DEG C. in the presence or absence of alkaline or acid catalysts, the acid catalysts, if used, being preferably introduced as salts of the aromatic amines. Phenolic by-products of the reaction may be removed by distillation under reduced pressure. Examples are given in which (1) 2,2-di-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane and aniline yield 2,2-di-(4-aminophenyl)propane and 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-(4-amino-phenyl)propane, (2) 1,1-di-(4-hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexane and aniline yield 1,1-di-(4-aminophenyl)cyclohexane and 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-(4-aminophenyl)cyclohexane, (3) 2,2-di-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane and o-toluidine yield 2,2-di-(4-amino-3-methylphenyl)propane and 2 - (4 - hydroxyphenyl) - 2 - (4 - amino - 3 -methylphenyl)propane, (4) 2,2-di-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane and N-methylaniline yield 2,2- di - (4 - methylaminophenyl)propane and 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl) - 2 - (4 - methylaminophenyl)propane. Other specified diphenylmethane derivatives which may be treated are 2,2-(2,41-dihydroxydiphenyl)propane 2,2-di-(2-hydroxyphenyl)propane, 2,2 - di - (4 - hydroxyphenyl)-butane, 2,2 - di - (4 - hydroxy - 3 - methylphenyl)propane, 2,2 - di - (4 - hydroxy - 3-chlorophenyl)propane and 1,1,1 - (4,41 - dihydroxy - triphenyl)ethane. Other specified aromatic amines which may be used are m- and p-toluidine, 2,6-, 2,3- and 2,5-xylidine and N,Nn-dimethylaniline.
