Ceruloplasmin and composition comprising pyruvate, lipid and an antioxidant (vitamin E)

A neuroprotective composition comprises ceruloplasmin or a functional derivative thereof and a neutralizing antioxidant having the capacity of neutralizing potential negative effects of H2O2 on the ceruloplasmin. The ceruloplasmin and neutralizing antioxidant are present in an amount to have a synergistic therapeutically effective beneficial effect on neuronal cells. Preferably the antioxidant is vitamin E. The composition may further comprise pyruvate. The composition can be use din the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment of neuronal cells, brain trauma, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, neurodegenerative diseases or poisoning of neuronal cells, the diminution of drugs side effects or the preservation of neuronal grafts. Also described is the use of ceruplasmin or a functional derivative thereof as an active agent in the preparation of a medicament for protecting neuronal cells against an oxidative stress or for treating neuronal oxidative stress related condition with the proviso that the composition does not comprises GP1-CP as the active agent.
