Described is a method for producing a hepatitis B antigen suitable for use in a vaccine. The method comprises purification of the antigen in the presence of a reducing agent having a free SH group and where the antigen is a stable immunogenic antigen without a trace of thiomersal and comprises less than 0.025ìg mercury per 20ìg protein.
