A heat-insulating laminate for use in the vacuum space of vacuum insulated apparatus comprises a plurality of layers of a gas-pervious heat-insulating material, at least one side of each of the layers having a metallic layer deposited directly thereon. The heat-insulating material is preferably uncombustible, e.g. woven or paper-like glass-fibres but may also be a woven fibrous material such as a polyamide, a polyterephthalate or a polyacrylonitrile. Suitable metals are gold, silver, copper and aluminium and may be applied to the individual layers by vacuum deposition, applying a metal salt and converting it to metal by reduction or by applying a suspension of the metal in a liquid and evaporating the liquid. The laminate may be secured in place in the vacuum apparatus by metal strip clips or a netting of wire, plastics or textile material.</p> |
